Clapotis!
So, after all the hype, I've finally made my own version of Clapotis. I didn't have enough yarn to make it the same size as the pattern called for, so instead of 6 repeats on the increases and decreases, I only did 5, but I still had a bit of yarn left. I think it is still enough to make it a functional small scarf or shawl that you can pin to hold it around the shoulders. This one is for my grandmother, so I hope she likes it. She also has lots of pins she could wear with it! I love the yarn I used, which I picked up at Stitches Midwest in August. I used a Brooks Farm yarn, Harmony (55% Mohair, 22.5% wool, 22.5% silk), and I started with 500 yards. I really loved their stuff at Stitches, and wish I had bought more. I used size 8 needles for the pattern, and it worked out pretty well. I haven't blocked it yet, but right now it's about 62" long, and 15.5" wide (slightly streched).I'm still working on the Kyoto sweater from Knitty, but I'm on the sleeves, and it's just stockinette, so I've been doing other projects in between (like Clapotis!). I did steam-iron block some of the other pieces today, which felt good. Maybe that will motivate me to get it done! Another thing I've been making are washcloths. I got some Sugar & Cream cotton (Buttercream color) and made 2 last week for a double-baby shower last weekend. They went fast and were pretty fun. I plan to make a few more for another friend. The pattern I used for these two, Grandmother's Favorite, is very fast and easy!
Finally, I wish I had seen this pattern before halloween... I love Star Wars!

Lynn,
I'm sitting here in Hawaii, blue skies birds singing, remembering a day long before my existence. A day of smoke and fire and death. Of sinking battleships and torpedoes. Of men burning in utter agony while others spoke congratulations in another language. A day that spread bloodshed across the waters of the great ocean. A day that will live in infamy. Happy Birthday!!!!
Ok. So maybe that isn't what you want to hear on your birthday. It just happens to be the 65th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, and its a big memorial day, and I work for the Park Service and all, and one of the places I work is the USS Arizona. So naturally, I was compelled to write you on your birthday and let you know that you still float around in my mind and I wonder what wonderful art you're creating. I've been adapting my painting skill in a more realistic temperment, and my photography from Bolivia and Peru has come out better than I expeected. I've got some great shots and have put about half of a book together, so maybe over Christmas I'll finally be able to finish it. I just happened to get myself a little busy. I took a job with the National Park Service in Hawaii, so I'm stationed on the Big Island in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. They send me travelling all over the pacific (I'm the aquatic ecologist for the Pacific Island Network). Since I started, they've sent me all over Hawaii (Kalaupapa NHP [Molokai], Haleakala NP [Maui], all five parks on the Big island, and the USS Arizona [Oahu]), as well as Guam (War in the Pacific NP), Saipan (American Memorial P), and American Samoa (NP of American Samoa). A little crazy, but I've been getting some wonderful shots and great ideas for new art projects all the time. Some of the Samoan wood carving is just fantastic.
But anywho, I just wanted to write and wish you a happy birthday. I hope all is going well in your world and you're finding time to smile and appreciate the joy of living. From the little things like the taste of a well cooked meal to the larger joys of friendship and companionship. If there was one thing that I could give you as a birthday present it would be a reminder of the joy of life. To forget the drudgery and cares of the world for just one day.
Anyway, I need to get to work, but once again happy birthday....
Oh yeah, I had a long chat with your sorority mom the other day (she was staying at my house for thanksgiving)...quite interesting. She's having fun acting in her LA world and doing quite well. Thought you might want to know.
Cheers,
Tahzay
Tahzay - or Allison, who will see this comment first - I've just gotten your comment now! I'm not sure why... but it is on another good occasion - Dan's and my 3rd Wedding Anniversary! So you're in Hawaii now - fabulous. I really need to visit there sometime. Maybe we can keep the trend of meeting up in far away places. Speaking of Yuwen, she and Guido will be in Chicago in a few days for a visit. And I can't believe you know Sharm??? If you have her email, send it my way. And if you have a new email, send it my way (or Allison, if you can be so kind! send to j.lynn.barnett at gmail dot com). Did I tell you that I'm the RH of Henderson in Pierce now with my husband? We're almost done with our first year. It's been great. So much to tell you... get in touch with me! Always great, and surprising, to hear from you! -- Lynn
